Medical Coder/Biller

Atlantic Technical Center


 

The Medical Coder / Biller program is a comprehensive certificate program.  Medical Coding is the transformation of diseases, injuries and procedure descriptions into numerical designations. A Medical Coder/Biller is an individual who reviews medical records and assigns codes to diagnoses and procedures to support clinical care, to assist medical research, and to provide information for reimbursement purposes.

Medical Coder/Billers are employed in hospitals, physician's offices, other health care facilities, and insurance companies.

The Medical Coder/ Biller training program includes:

  • Medical record science
  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Disease process/pathophysiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Basic ICD-CM coding and advanced coding

An Applied Technology Diploma is awarded upon the successful completion of the program in accordance with State guidelines. Graduates may continue their education by earning an associate degree as an Accredited Health Information Management Technologist.

Completion Time:
The length of this program is 1000 hours (approximately 10 months).

Industry Certification & State Credential Exams
Completing students will be eligible to take the following: The American Health Information Association Certified Coding Associate, Medical Coding Certified Professional Coder; and State of Florida Ready to Work.

College Credit Transfer Opportunity and / or Advanced Credit:
Upon completion of the program and meeting eligibility requirements, students may be awarded up to twenty-six (26) college credits (maximum) by Broward College toward an A.S. Degree in Health Information Management.

Special Notes:
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Typing skills are necessary for success in this program.

Students enrolling in any Health Science Education program must undergo a Level II criminal background check and drug screening, per the Joint Commission of Healthcare Organizations. Students who do not have a valid social security number may encounter difficulty with certain state licensing agencies and registries. Contact the program counselor for specific information.
